Hanan Alexander - Professor and Head

Prof. Rabbi Hanan Alexander chairs the Department of Education at the University of Haifa where he specializes in philosophy of education and curriculum studies and heads the Center for Jewish Education and the International School for Overseas Students. He is also a Senior Fellow in the Institute for Philosophy, Politics, and Religion of Jerusalem's Shalem Center, a Research fellow in the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, a Visiting Fellow in St. Edmund's College, Cambridge, and Chair of the Executive Board of the Schechter Rabbinical Seminary in Jerusalem.



Before moving to Israel with his wife and three children in 1999, Alexander taught philosophy and educational studies at the University of Judaism where he held a variety of positions including Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Dean of the Fingerhut School of Education.
He also served as Lecturer in Education at UCLA, Editor of Religious Education: An Interfaith Journal of Spirituality, Growth, and Transformation, and Visiting Fellow in the Center for Advanced Religious and Theological Studies (CARTS) of Cambridge University's School of Theology; and has taught at a variety of institutions in Israel and abroad.

Alexander earned a Ph. D. in Education and Humanities from Stanford University and was ordained a rabbi by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He has published widely in a variety of academic and professional venues on Jewish thought, philosophy of education, curriculum theory, and spiritual, religious, and Jewish education.

His book Reclaiming Goodness: Education and the Spiritual Quest (University of Notre Dame Press 2001) is winner of a 2001-2002 National Jewish Book Award. He recently edited, Ethics and Spirituality in Education: Philosophical, Theological, and Radical Perspectives, for Sussex Academic Press (2002). In 2010, his edited volume entitled: "Citizenship, Education, and Social Conflict" was published, together with "Commitment, Character, and Citizenship: Religious Schooling in Liberal Democracy", published in 2011.
